Advantages of Temporary Work
It is not always possible to determine if
a job and a candidate are compatible based on the resume and one
or two interviews. For this reason, many companies and job seekers
use temporary assignments, usually through a staffing firm, as
a way to evaluate the "fit." In addition, whether or not there
is a specific opening in a company, many temporary assignments
open doors to new opportunities.
Maximize the opportunity. You can
enhance your chances of converting temporary assignments into a
full-time position by following these tips:
- Ask questions of the supervisor
on your assignment about company policies, procedures and office etiquette.
- Be willing to accept additional
responsibilities and exhibit a cooperative, "can-do" attitude.
- Request feedback about your performance
and be open to guidance and constructive criticism.
- Regard yourself as a member of
the team and not "just a temporary."
- Avoid office politics and gossip.
- Network within an organization.
Don't be afraid to discreetly make others aware of your career
goals and objectives.
"Audition" for the job. At the same
time an employer is evaluating your performance in the position,
you can get a feel for what the job is actually like. By "auditioning"
for the job in this manner, you are able to gather more information
about both the position and the company from the best vantage point,
the inside. By accepting different temporary assignments through
a temporary staffing firm, you can sample various positions, companies,
and work settings to determine where you will be the happiest.
While you view temporary assignments as auditions, think of the
staffing firm as your "agent." Let the service know the type of
assignments you prefer, how often you would like to work, and if
you would like temping to be a stepping stone to full-time employment.
The service can help you by seeking assignments with the greatest
potential to convert to full-time.
