Meet Our Team

Julie Brown, President

Julie Brown is the President of SDI Staffing.  She started SDIS in 1995 and specializes in placing temporary and direct-hire employees throughout Southern California for the insurance and financial services industries. Julie is a California Licensed Fire/Casualty Agent and a Certified Staffing Professional.  She is a member of the American Staffing Association (ASA) and California Staffing Professionals.  She is the past president and current treasurer of the San Diego Chapter of California Staffing Professionals and is the director for the San Diego Chapter on the state board.  She is active in San Diego Insurance Women and PWI, where she has served numerous roles including president.  She actively participates as a member of the Independent Brokers and Agents of San Diego, and the Risk Insurance Management Society (RIMS) San Diego Chapter.  In 2008, Julie was asked to join the steering committee of the San Diego Chapter of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF).  She also teaches insurance and personal development classes to clients and industry organizations.She has been recognized with numerous awards, including SBA’s “Women Owned Business of the Year for San Diego and Imperial Counties,” “Employer of the Year” by the San Diego Workforce Partnership, “Women Who Mean Business” Award from the San Diego Business Journal, “Insurance Woman of the Year” from PWI, “Associate Member of the Year” by the Independent Brokers & Agents of San Diego, and the Career Sponsorship Award by the OPT Program at Grossmont College for her dedication to educate young people about the insurance industry.

Prior to founding SDI Staffing, Julie spent more than 12 years in insurance both at carrier and agency level in Southern California and North Carolina.  From sales and customer service in both personal and commercial lines, to operations manager, Julie learned the insurance industry.

She is a native of San Diego, married with two children, a daughter and a son, and enjoys camping, reading, and attending her kid’s athletic events.  She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a minor in Economics from the University of California at San Diego.  During race season she can be found every other weekend at Barona Speedway watching her son and husband racing dwarf cars.

Michelle Castro, Vice President of Staffing Operations

Michelle has been with SDI Staffing since 1997, has an in depth knowledge of CA Employment Laws, is a Certified Staffing Professional, is a member of the American Staffing Association, and assists with the company’s multiple industry projects for organizations such as PWI, IIAB and others. As Vice President of Staffing Operations, Michelle is responsible for the profitability of division operations. She ensures organizational effectiveness, identifies and implements best practices, and establishes accounting policies, practices, and procedures for SDIS. She manages Human Resources, administers employee benefits and workers compensation claims, and works as the primary network administrator troubleshooting computer and server issues, maintaining the company’s databases, installing software, and updating the company’s website.

Michelle has traveled quite a bit over the years as a military dependent, but calls San Diego home where she spends time with her daughter and Boxer-Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. She enjoys quality time with family and friends, traveling, and fishing whenever she gets the chance.

Garrett Lawley, Talent Acquisition Specialist

Garrett is originally from Tucson, Arizona where he grew up playing multiple sports, which led to an opportunity to play college baseball at San Diego Christian College. Before attending, Garrett was accepted in the Dr. Henry Morris Leadership program. All of the training in the program helped groom Garrett to becoming the Student Body President in his final year at San Diego Christian College. Garrett graduated earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with an emphasis in Interpersonal Communication.

Since graduating, Garrett has become intrigued about insurance and was previously working as a Benefits Specialist in the life and health fields. Garrett enjoys talking to others and has a passion for helping those that are looking for a change in their career. Garrett has made it a mission to help as many people as he can in his role at SDI Staffing.

Garrett still has the competitive mentality and, in his free time, frequently competes in different sports leagues. He also enjoys the beach and surfing and makes the most out of every day.

Alison Mollenhauer, Talent Acquisition Specialist

Alison joined SDI Staffing in 2017.  She possesses a ten year background in recruiting, hiring, and personnel management for several successful multi-unit restaurant corporations. She has spent the past decade passionate about finding people jobs that they love, which in turn allows brands to flourish.

Alison attended both Pepperdine University and The University of San Diego, majoring in Fine Arts and Psychology. Growing up, Alison spent a lot of time traveling the world with her mother, brother, and grandmother, all avid travelers. For fun, Alison loves cooking, reading, traveling, painting, hiking, and spending quiet time with her family.

Rosa Ramirez, Staffing Assistant

rr-2015Rosa originally joined SDI Staffing in 2007 as Staffing Assistant. She brings with her a wealth of administrative skills from a variety of industries to include Workers’ Compensation Law, Insurance, and Family Law. Her legal experience was obtained through working for Workers’ Compensation Attorneys for many years and her insurance experience was acquired while working in the Underwriting Department of a well-recognized Insurance Carrier. She has processed Loss Runs and MVRs, ordered property inspections, reviewed inspections, has sent clients’ notices of outcome of inspections, and processed endorsements and renewals. Additionally, Rosa has taken many workshops in Organization and Human Resources giving her key skills in managing her current position. She wears many hats at SDI Staffing from checking references to assisting new hires navigating through the hiring process and you can always hear her smile in her phone greeting.

Rosa enjoys living in beautiful San Diego. She finds time to go to the beach and hike at Cowles Mountain. She also enjoys baking, cooking, stitching, and loom knitting.

Paula Taylor, Account Manager – Insurance Division

Paula Taylor joined SDI Staffing in June 2012. She brings with her 11 years of insurance industry experience, working in insurance as both an employee and an independent contractor on the East Coast and in California. Paula worked as an employee for an independent agency where she performed sales, customer service and marketing tasks for personal and commercial lines. She has also worked as an independent contractor building her own book of insurance business, outside marketing and servicing her clients. She holds 3 National Insurance Designations and is a member of PWI. This industry experience has given Paula an intimate understanding of our clients’ unique placement and training needs.

Paula enjoys cooking, traveling, scrapbooking and outdoor activities in San Diego.

Sharlene Theakston, Director of Recruiting

IMG_4272Sharlene has been with SDI Staffing since 1998. She is most passionate about recruiting, helping candidates find a successful career in insurance, and assisting clients with finding the top talent they are seeking. Currently, Sharlene works as the Director of Recruiting. She evaluates applicants on their skills, education, work history, personality and salary requirements. She also works with clients to assist them in their search for applicants that have the experience and skills they are seeking for their office. As Director of Recruiting, Sharlene assists with the management of the SDIS staff. She works as a mentor and coach to help the team reach successful sales and customer service goals. With a positive and nurturing approach, Sharlene is definitely qualified to handle tough client situations. Her motto is, “The customer is always right!” Sharlene is an active member of Professional Women in Insurance, California Staffing Professionals and the American Staffing Association. She is trained in CA Employment and Sexual Harassment Law (FMLA, Meal & Rest Periods, Exempt & Non-Exempt Employees, etc.).

Sharlene was born and raised in San Diego, CA. She enjoys riding her Razor-S in the desert and spending time with her husband, step-daughters and two Labrador retrievers.
